Polusi cahaya paling parah terjadi di wilayah yang telah terindustrialisasi dengan kepadatan penduduk tinggi di Amerika Utara, Eropa, dan Jepang, serta kota-kota utama di Timur Tengah dan Afrika Utara seperti Kairo.





Polusi cahaya membuat bintang dan bulan tak tampak. Burung yang bermigrasi menggunakan bintang dan bulan sebagai alat navigasi. Akibat adanya polusi cahaya, mereka tidak dapat bermigrasi ke tempat yang tepat. Penyu laut juga tidak datang ke pantai dan bertelur seperti biasa karena takut dengan cahaya.
